Hybrid Striped Bass

If you're hunting hybrid striped bass near Lefors, consider a trip to Lake McClellan. While not specifically managed for hybrids, occasional stockings and natural reproduction provide opportunities to catch these hard-fighting fish. Spring and fall are the most productive times, as the hybrids actively chase shad schools. Look for surface activity early and late in the day. Trolling crankbaits or casting swimbaits that imitate shad can be very effective. A local trick is to use your electronics to locate schools of baitfish and focus your efforts in those areas. Hybrids tend to roam, so be prepared to move around to find them. Lake McClellan offers limited boat ramp facilities, so arrive early, especially on weekends. Be aware of wind conditions, as the lake can get choppy quickly.
