Hybrid Striped Bass

Hybrid Striped Bass, a hard-fighting cousin of the true striper, can be found in the freshwater areas around West Columbia, Texas. Unlike their anadromous cousins, these hybrids are typically stocked in lakes and reservoirs but sometimes escape into river systems like the Brazos. Look for them in the same areas you'd target stripers – deeper holes, river bends, and near any structure. The key to success is often finding the baitfish. Hybrids are aggressive predators and will readily strike lures that mimic their prey. Spring and fall are prime times to target them as they school up and feed heavily. A local tactic is to use sonar to locate schools of baitfish and then cast crankbaits or jigs into the area. Be sure to check local fishing reports for stocking information, as hybrid populations rely on regular replenishment. Access to the Brazos River is available at several public boat ramps along Highway 35.
