Lake Trout

Lake Trout fishing around Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin, provides access to some excellent deep-water opportunities on Lake Michigan. What distinguishes this location is its proximity to deep structure and offshore reefs that hold Lake Trout year-round. While they can be caught throughout the year, the spring and fall months are particularly productive as the fish move into shallower water to feed and spawn. Jigging with heavy spoons or trolling with downriggers are effective tactics. Be prepared to fish deep, often in depths of 80 to 200 feet. A local tip: invest in a good quality sonar unit to locate schools of baitfish and identify underwater structure. The Lake Trout population in this area is generally healthy, with a good mix of sizes. The Cana Island State Park boat launch provides good access to the lake, but be aware that it can be exposed to strong winds, so check the marine forecast before heading out.
