While not as famous as some of the larger reservoirs in the state, these hidden gems can hold some surprisingly big fish. Spring is the classic time to target spawning bass in the shallows, but don't overlook the fall, when bass are actively feeding to prepare for winter. Local tip: Check out some of the smaller, less-pressured lakes and ponds in the area, some of which require a short hike. These often hold some of the biggest bass. Also, pay attention to water clarity; in clearer water, use natural-looking baits, while in murky water, opt for brighter colors and lures that create a lot of vibration. Expect to find healthy populations with a good mix of sizes.
