While Groton Long Point is known for its coastal charm, don't overlook the freshwater bass fishing opportunities nearby. Several ponds and lakes within a short drive of the point offer good largemouth bass populations. These waters tend to be relatively small, making them ideal for kayak or canoe fishing. Focus your efforts around weed lines, docks, and any other available cover. Spring and fall are generally the best times to target bass, as they are more active in cooler water temperatures. During the summer months, try fishing early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the heat. Plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are all effective lures. A local tip: Pay attention to water clarity. In clearer water, natural-colored lures tend to work best, while in stained water, brighter colors may be more effective. Access to some of these ponds may be limited, so research public access points before you go.
