Northern Pike

Although Groton Long Point is largely coastal, anglers willing to venture inland can find some northern pike fishing opportunities. Select ponds and lakes in the surrounding area hold populations of these aggressive predators. Look for weedy areas, shallow bays, and submerged timber, as these are prime pike ambush spots. Spring, just after ice-out, and fall are the most productive times to target pike. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Live bait, such as shiners or suckers, can also be used. A wire leader is essential to prevent pike from biting through your line. Be prepared for a strong fight, as pike are known for their powerful runs and acrobatic jumps. Access to some of these waters may be limited, so research public access points beforehand. Local tip: Focus on areas where the water is slightly warmer than the surrounding areas, as pike tend to congregate in these spots.
