Largemouth Bass

For largemouth bass anglers in northwest Iowa, Alvord presents some solid opportunities. While not boasting massive lakes, the smaller bodies of water and sloughs in the area can hold surprisingly good numbers of largemouths. The best fishing typically occurs from late spring through early fall. During the spawn in late spring, look for bass bedding in shallow, protected areas. As summer progresses, focus on weed lines and submerged vegetation. A key local tip is to explore the many smaller, unnamed ponds and sloughs accessible from gravel roads. Many of these spots receive little fishing pressure. The largemouth bass in this region tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from spinnerbaits and crankbaits to soft plastics, can be effective. Don't be afraid to experiment to find what they're hitting on a given day.
