Largemouth Bass

For largemouth bass near Cherokee, Iowa, look no further than the Little Sioux River and its associated backwaters and oxbows. This area presents a unique opportunity to target bass in a riverine environment. Spring and early summer are excellent times to fish, as the bass move into the shallows to spawn. Focus on areas with vegetation, downed trees, and other structure that provide cover. As the water warms up during the summer, bass will often move into deeper holes and shaded areas. Try using topwater lures early and late in the day, and switch to crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or soft plastics as the sun gets higher. Fall can also be productive as bass feed heavily before winter. While the Little Sioux isn't known for producing trophy bass, it offers a chance to catch good numbers of fish in a scenic setting. Largemouth average 1-3 pounds, but larger specimens are certainly possible.
