Largemouth Bass

Northeast Iowa isn't the first place that comes to mind for trophy largemouth, but the sloughs and backwaters off the Mississippi River near Garber can surprise you. The best bass fishing here is during the pre-spawn in late spring (late April-May) when the fish move into the shallows to feed. Fall can also be productive as bass fatten up before winter. Focus your efforts on areas with submerged timber, lily pads, and other vegetation. Local tip: explore the areas around Guttenberg and Clayton for good public access points to the Mississippi backwaters. Be aware of fluctuating water levels, especially after heavy rains, as this can significantly impact fishing conditions. Look for clearer water pockets to maximize your chances.
