Largemouth Bass

Strathmoor Village, Kentucky, offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing within easy reach. The numerous small lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area, many connected to the Beargrass Creek watershed, are the key. These smaller bodies of water warm up quickly in the spring, making for excellent pre-spawn and spawning activity from late March through May. Focus on shallow areas with submerged vegetation or near any docks or piers. Summer can be productive using topwater lures early and late in the day, or switch to deeper diving crankbaits and jigs as the sun gets higher. Fall sees the bass feeding heavily before winter, so spinnerbaits and crankbaits retrieved along creek channels can be very effective. A local tip: many of these ponds are accessible from public parks, but be mindful of posted regulations regarding fishing and access. The bass in these smaller waters can be quite opportunistic, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lures and retrieve speeds.
