Largemouth Bass

If you're headed to Copemish, Michigan, with largemouth bass on your mind, you're in for a treat. This area, nestled near the Manistee National Forest, offers several excellent freshwater bass fishing opportunities. Local lakes like Bear Lake and Chief Lake are known for their healthy largemouth populations, offering diverse structure from weed beds to submerged timber. The best time to target these bass is during the pre-spawn in late spring (May-June) when they move into shallower waters to feed aggressively. Fall (September-October) is another prime time as they fatten up for the winter. For a local tip, try targeting the edges of lily pads with weedless lures or topwater frogs during the warmer months. Access to many of these lakes is available via public boat launches, but be aware that some may have limited parking. The bass in this region tend to be relatively aggressive, responding well to a variety of presentations. Keep an eye on water clarity, as it can fluctuate, and adjust your lure color accordingly.
