Largemouth Bass

Decatur, Michigan, while not on a major river system, offers some excellent Largemouth Bass fishing in its numerous inland lakes. The area is dotted with smaller lakes and ponds, many with healthy populations of largemouths. Spring and early summer, particularly during and after the spawn, are the most productive times. Look for bass in shallow weedy areas, near docks, and around submerged structure. Plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and topwater lures can all be effective. As the water warms up in the summer, focus on deeper water and shaded areas. A local tip: many of these lakes have limited public access, so be sure to check local regulations and obtain permission before fishing on private property. Lake of the Woods, near Decatur, is a popular choice offering public access and a variety of bass habitat. The bass in this area tend to be aggressive, making for exciting topwater action.
