Largemouth Bass

Lansing-area anglers know that DeWitt, Michigan, provides convenient access to several excellent largemouth bass fisheries. The Looking Glass River winds through the area, offering opportunities for bank fishing and small boat access. However, the real hotspots are the numerous small lakes and ponds dotting the landscape. These waters, often overlooked, can hold surprisingly large bass. Spring and fall are peak seasons. During the spring spawn, target shallow, weedy areas with soft plastics or spinnerbaits. As summer progresses, bass move deeper, so switch to crankbaits and jigs around submerged structure. A key tip: many of these smaller lakes have limited public access. Research access points beforehand, and consider using a kayak or canoe to reach less-pressured areas. Also, pay attention to water clarity. Stained water often produces better results than clear water. The bass in these waters are known for their aggressive strikes and willingness to chase lures, making for exciting fishing.
