Largemouth Bass

If you're heading to Eau Claire, Michigan, for largemouth bass, you're in for some classic Midwest freshwater action. The area is dotted with smaller lakes and ponds perfect for targeting these fish, though you'll want to look slightly further afield to the larger bodies of water in the region for the best results. Dowagiac and Barron Lake are both within easy driving distance and offer good largemouth habitat. Spring (late May/early June) is prime time as the bass move shallow to spawn. Fish the shallows with spinnerbaits and soft plastics. Fall (September/October) is also productive as they feed up before winter. Try targeting weed lines and drop-offs with crankbaits and jigs. A local tip: many of the smaller lakes have limited public access; research access points carefully beforehand and be prepared to walk a bit. The largemouth population here is generally healthy, with a good mix of sizes, so you've got a shot at a real trophy.
