Largemouth Bass

Mackinaw City provides a unique backdrop for Largemouth Bass fishing, blending access to both the Great Lakes and inland lakes. While the big lake itself isn't ideal for bass, the smaller, warmer inland lakes just south of town are where you'll find the action. Look for lakes with plenty of vegetation, docks, and submerged structure. Summer is undoubtedly the best time to target largemouth here, as the water temperatures are warmest and the bass are most active. Early mornings and late evenings are particularly productive. A local's secret is to focus on the shallow, weedy bays during the spawn in late spring/early summer. Consider using weedless lures like Texas-rigged worms or topwater frogs in these areas. Remember, some of these inland lakes have size and creel limits, so check the Michigan DNR regulations before you head out. The bass in these northern lakes can be surprisingly chunky, so be ready for a good fight.
