Largemouth Bass

McBain offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing opportunities, particularly in the smaller lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area. While not known for trophy bass, these waters provide consistent action, especially for anglers using smaller boats or kayaks. The best time to target largemouth in McBain is during the late spring and early summer, when they're actively spawning in the shallows. Look for weedy areas and submerged structure in lakes like Lake City (just west of McBain) or even some of the smaller unnamed ponds on public land. A local's secret: try fishing during the mayfly hatch; bass will often key in on these insects and the baitfish feeding on them. Public access is generally decent, but be prepared for smaller, less developed boat launches. The bass population consists mainly of fish in the 1-3 pound range, but you might get lucky and find something bigger. Focus on the shallower, warmer parts of the lake early and late in the day.
