If you're chasing largemouth in the North Branch area, you're in for a treat. This part of Michigan boasts numerous small lakes and ponds perfect for bass fishing, often overlooked compared to the bigger, more well-known lakes to the west. Look for the smaller, more secluded waters off the beaten path; these often hold surprisingly large bass that see less fishing pressure. Prime time is late spring (May-June) when the bass are spawning, and again in the fall (September-October) as they fatten up for winter. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation, fallen timber, and docks. A local tip: many of these lakes have limited public access.
