Largemouth Bass

Plainwell, Michigan, situated along the Kalamazoo River, provides some excellent largemouth bass fishing opportunities. The river itself, along with nearby Gun Lake and other smaller lakes in the area, are known for holding quality largemouth. Summer is generally the best time to target largemouth here, as they become more active in the warmer water. Focus on areas with heavy cover, such as lily pads, weed beds, and submerged timber. Topwater lures like frogs and buzzbaits can be incredibly effective in the early morning and late evening. Flipping and pitching jigs or Texas-rigged plastics into the thickest cover is another reliable tactic. Gun Lake, in particular, offers good boat access with several public launches. Be mindful of boat traffic, especially on weekends. The Kalamazoo River can be accessed by boat or wading in certain areas. Always check water levels and be aware of potential hazards like swift currents and submerged obstacles.
