Largemouth Bass

Plymouth, Michigan offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing within easy reach of the Detroit metro area. While you won't find sprawling lakes here, the smaller bodies of water like Wilcox Lake and the Rouge River offer a more intimate and challenging bass fishing experience. Spring, particularly pre-spawn (late April/early May), is prime time, as the bass move into shallower waters to feed and prepare for spawning. Fall can also be productive as they fatten up for winter. Focus on structure like fallen trees, weed edges, and docks. The Rouge River, though not known for its size, holds some decent bass, especially in the slower, deeper pools. A kayak or canoe can be ideal for accessing some of the more secluded spots. Local tip: Wilcox Lake has a public access point off Beck Road, but it can get crowded on weekends. Consider fishing during the week for a quieter experience. The bass here aren't pressured as heavily as in larger, more popular lakes, so experiment with different lures and presentations to find what they're biting on.
