Largemouth Bass

If you're chasing Largemouth Bass in the Thumb region, Vassar, Michigan, is worth a look. The Cass River and the numerous smaller lakes and ponds dotting the landscape offer a variety of bass fishing environments. The Cass River itself holds bass, but the backwaters and connected lakes are often more productive. Look for lily pads, fallen timber, and weed beds – classic largemouth habitat. Spring and early summer, during and after the spawn, are excellent times to fish. Plastic worms, jigs, and spinnerbaits are reliable choices. For a more challenging experience, try topwater lures early in the morning or late in the evening. Public access to the Cass River is available at several points in Vassar, including near the bridge in town. Be aware that the river can be shallow in places, so wading or a small boat or kayak is ideal. Largemouth in this area are generally in the 1-3 pound range, with occasional bigger fish reported.
