Largemouth Bass

Woodland, Michigan, offers some great largemouth bass fishing in its many inland lakes and the nearby Thornapple River. While not necessarily known for trophy bass, this area boasts a healthy population and plenty of action. The best time to target largemouth is during the spring spawning season and again in the fall as they fatten up for winter. During the spawn, look for them in shallow bays and around lily pads. In the fall, focus on deeper water near weed lines. Plastic worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Many of the smaller lakes are accessible only by kayak or canoe, offering a more secluded fishing experience. If you're fishing the Thornapple River, pay attention to current breaks and submerged structure. Local tip: The public access site on Morrison Lake is a popular spot, but can get crowded on weekends. Consider exploring some of the smaller, less-known lakes for a chance at more solitude and potentially bigger bass. The bass in this region tend to be aggressive, so don't be afraid to experiment with different retrieves and lure colors.
