Largemouth Bass

Yale, Michigan, offers some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing in its network of smaller lakes and connected waterways. While not a trophy bass destination, the St. Clair River watershed provides excellent habitat for healthy populations of largemouth. Focus your efforts on the numerous small lakes and ponds dotting the landscape around Yale; many offer accessible shore fishing. Spring (late May-June) is prime time, as the bass are actively spawning in the shallows. Look for weed beds and submerged timber in 4-8 feet of water. Early morning and late evening are typically the most productive times. A local tip: many of these lakes are best fished from a kayak or canoe due to limited shoreline access in certain areas. Also, be mindful of private property when accessing waterways.
