Largemouth Bass

Bayard, Nebraska, might not be the first place that comes to mind for trophy largemouth bass, but the area's smaller lakes and reservoirs offer surprisingly good fishing. Bridgeport State Recreation Area, just a short drive from Bayard, is a popular choice. Largemouth bass fishing is best during the spring and fall months when water temperatures are moderate. Look for bass holding around submerged vegetation, points, and drop-offs. Plastic worms, jigs, and crankbaits are all effective. A local tip: many anglers have success fishing the shallower, weedy areas with topwater lures early in the morning or late in the evening. The bass in these smaller waters tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations. Bass size can vary, but there are enough quality fish to make for an enjoyable outing.
