Largemouth Bass

The Nebraska Sandhills around Halsey offer some surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing. The numerous small lakes and ponds scattered throughout the region, many on private land, hold healthy populations. While access to these private waters requires permission, several public access options, such as the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest, provide opportunities. Spring and early summer, during the spawn and post-spawn, are peak times for targeting bass. Look for them in shallow weedy areas and near submerged structure. Topwater lures, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics are all effective. The bass in these Sandhills lakes often exhibit excellent coloration due to the clear water and sandy bottoms. Be prepared for potentially windy conditions, which can make boat control challenging. Also, insect repellent is a must during the warmer months.
