Largemouth Bass

While Brigantine is best known for its saltwater fishing, don't overlook the freshwater opportunities for largemouth bass in the back bays and tidal creeks. These fish can be surprisingly plentiful. Focus your efforts in the spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) when the water temperatures are moderate and the bass are actively feeding. Look for structure like submerged vegetation, docks, and fallen trees, especially near the mouths of creeks where they meet the bay. A key local tip: target the outgoing tide as the bass will often stage near these areas to ambush prey. Access can be tricky; kayaks or small boats are ideal for navigating the shallow waters. Be sure to check tide charts before heading out, as extreme low tides can limit access to some areas. Local bass tend to be on the smaller side, but there are definitely some quality fish to be caught with the right approach.
