Largemouth Bass

East Rutherford, NJ, might be known for the Meadowlands, but don't overlook the surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing in the surrounding freshwater bodies. The Hackensack River, along with smaller lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area, holds a decent population. Spring (pre-spawn) and fall are prime times. Bass are often staging in the shallows as the water warms or cools, making them accessible to anglers fishing from shore or small boats. Look for submerged structure and weed lines. Local Tip: Access to the Hackensack River can be tricky, but there are a few public access points near Route 17. Be mindful of tidal fluctuations, as they can affect water levels and bass activity. The bass in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to soft plastics, can be effective. Don't be afraid to experiment!
