Largemouth Bass

While Harvey Cedars is best known for its saltwater fishing, don't overlook the opportunity to chase largemouth bass in the nearby freshwater ponds and creeks. These smaller, often overlooked waterways, connected to the Barnegat Bay watershed, can hold surprisingly good populations of bass. Spring and fall are prime times, as the bass are actively feeding before and after the summer heat. Look for structure like submerged vegetation, fallen trees, and docks, as these provide ambush points for bass. A local tip: many of these ponds are accessible from the roadside, but be mindful of private property and always seek permission when necessary. The bass here tend to be opportunistic feeders, so a variety of lures, from crankbaits to soft plastics, can be effective. Don't be afraid to experiment with different presentations to find what the fish are keying on. A kayak or small boat can greatly expand your access to the best fishing spots.
