Largemouth Bass

Leonia, NJ, while close to the urban sprawl, offers some surprisingly decent largemouth bass fishing if you know where to look. While there aren't any massive lakes nearby, Overpeck Creek and its associated impoundments provide the best opportunities. These smaller bodies of water can hold some quality bass, particularly for anglers willing to explore. Spring is an excellent time to target bass here, as they move into the shallows to spawn. Look for them around weed beds, docks, and any other structure providing cover. Early morning and late evening are often the most productive times. A local tip: Overpeck County Park provides access to the creek and several smaller ponds. Focus on areas with submerged structure and use weedless lures to avoid snags. Bass in this area generally range from 1-3 pounds, but the occasional 5+ pounder is reported.
