Largemouth Bass

Matawan, NJ, might not be the first place you think of for serious bass fishing, but several smaller lakes and ponds in the area offer surprisingly good largemouth action. Lake Lefferts, for example, is a popular spot. Spring and fall are the peak seasons. During the spring prespawn and spawn, focus on shallow weedy areas with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and soft plastics. In the fall, as the water cools, bass will often school up and chase baitfish. Topwater lures can be deadly at this time. Access to some of these smaller waters may be limited to shore fishing or require small boats or kayaks. Be sure to check local regulations regarding boat launches and permits. The bass in these waters tend to be on the smaller side, but numbers can be good, and the occasional 4-5 pounder is definitely possible. Consider fishing near structure like docks, submerged timber, and weed edges for best results.
