Largemouth Bass

Central New Jersey might not be the first place that springs to mind for trophy bass, but the Millstone area offers surprisingly good largemouth fishing, particularly in the numerous small ponds, lakes and the Millstone River itself. These waters, often overlooked, provide ideal habitat for bass to thrive. Spring and fall are prime times. During the spring pre-spawn (late March-April), focus on shallow, weedy areas with spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and soft plastics. As the water warms, bass move deeper, relating to structure. Fall sees a resurgence of activity as bass feed aggressively before winter. Local Tip: Public access can be limited, so scout locations carefully. Some smaller ponds are accessible from road pull-offs, but be respectful of private property. Kayak fishing is a great way to explore the Millstone River and reach secluded spots. The bass here can be surprisingly wary, so use lighter line and natural presentations.
