Largemouth Bass

While Perth Amboy might be better known for its saltwater access, the freshwater tributaries and ponds nearby offer surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing. The Raritan River, particularly the stretch above the saltwater line, holds a decent population of bass, especially around submerged structure and vegetation. Smaller ponds and lakes in the surrounding Middlesex County parks can also be productive. Spring and fall are the best times to target bass here, as they're more active in the cooler water. During the spring spawn, look for bass in shallow, protected areas. In the fall, focus on areas with baitfish activity. A local tip is to use weedless lures, as there's often heavy vegetation in these waters. Largemouth Bass in this area tend to be on the smaller side compared to other regions, but they can still provide a fun and accessible fishing experience, especially for anglers looking for a quick trip close to home.
