Largemouth Bass

While Kill Devil Hills is known for its saltwater access, don't overlook the freshwater largemouth bass fishing opportunities in the surrounding areas. The numerous canals and ponds connected to the Albemarle Sound offer surprisingly good bass fishing. These waters are often stained and weedy, providing excellent cover. Spring is prime time, as the bass move shallow to spawn. Topwater lures, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics are all effective choices. Summer can be tougher due to the heat, but fishing early mornings and late evenings can still produce. One local tip is to focus on areas where the canals intersect or where there's a change in depth. Also, be aware of the presence of alligators in some of these waters. The bass in these canals tend to be aggressive and hard-fighting, making for an exciting fishing experience. Access is often limited to private property, so look for public access points or consider hiring a local guide who knows the area well.
