Largemouth Bass

While Swansboro, North Carolina, is primarily known for its saltwater fishing, surprisingly good largemouth bass fishing can be found in the nearby freshwater rivers and creeks that feed into the Intracoastal Waterway. The White Oak River and its tributaries offer excellent opportunities, especially in the spring during the spawn. Look for bass holding near cypress trees, docks, and submerged vegetation. Topwater lures, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics are all effective. Be mindful of the tidal influence, as bass will often move with the tide. Fishing the outgoing tide near creek mouths can be particularly productive. A local tip: many of the best spots are accessible only by boat, so consider renting a kayak or small skiff. Also, be aware of alligators, which are common in these waters.
