Muskie

Rochester might not be the first place that comes to mind for Muskie, but Lake Ontario and its tributaries offer a legitimate shot at these apex predators. The key is timing and location. Focus your efforts from late summer through the fall, as water temperatures cool. Muskies tend to congregate near weed beds, rocky points, and areas with current. Trolling large bucktails, crankbaits, or jerkbaits is a popular technique. A local tip: the Genesee River, particularly near the mouth, can hold some surprisingly large muskies. Be prepared to put in the time; muskie fishing is notoriously challenging. Also, remember to practice catch and release to help maintain this fragile fishery. These fish are truly giants, so make sure you're equipped with heavy tackle and a good net.
