Chasing Muskie near Oswego? While not as famous as some other New York muskie waters, the eastern end of Lake Ontario and the lower Oswego River hold a population of these apex predators. The key is targeting areas with abundant baitfish and structure. Rocky points, weed beds, and drop-offs are all prime muskie locations. Fall is arguably the best time to target them as they feed heavily before winter. Throw large bucktails, jerkbaits, or crankbaits, and be prepared to put in the time – muskie fishing requires patience. A local's secret is to focus on areas where the river current meets the lake, as this can concentrate baitfish and attract muskies. The Oswego area isn't known for huge numbers of muskie, but the fish that are here can be quite large. Be sure to practice catch and release to help maintain this fishery. Access to the lake is available from several public boat launches in Oswego.
