Northern Pike

Targeting northern pike in Newtown, CT, requires a shift in tactics and location. Lake Lillinonah, a reservoir on the Housatonic River, is your best bet for encountering these toothy predators. Pike fishing here is best in the early spring (March/April) as the ice melts and the fish become more active in the shallows. Focus on areas near creek inlets, weedy bays, and submerged timber. Large swimbaits, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits are all effective lures for drawing strikes. Don't forget a wire leader, as pike will easily bite through monofilament or fluorocarbon. Another good time to target pike is in the fall (October/November) as they feed heavily before winter. Anglers should note that Lillinonah can be challenging to navigate due to its size and structure. A boat is highly recommended, and the state boat launch on Hanover Road provides good access. Be mindful of submerged hazards and changing water levels. The pike in Lillinonah are generally smaller than those found in larger, more northern waters, but a few fish exceeding 10 pounds are caught each year.
