Northern Pike

While Altoona isn't renowned for its pike fishing, determined anglers can find opportunities in some of the larger lakes and impoundments within a reasonable drive. Look to the larger lakes in central Iowa for your best chance. These waters offer the weedy habitat and forage base that pike need to thrive. Spring, particularly after ice-out, is a prime time as pike move into shallow bays to spawn. Fall is also excellent, as pike aggressively feed before winter. Large spoons, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are effective lures for covering water and triggering strikes. A local tip: pay attention to water clarity. Pike often ambush prey from cover, so focus on areas with weed beds, submerged timber, or drop-offs. Also, be prepared for toothy critters! Use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs. While you might not encounter monster pike, there's a decent chance of hooking into fish in the 3-6 pound range.
