Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Coon Rapids? While not a premier pike fishery, the Middle Raccoon River and some of the larger ponds in the area do hold populations of these toothy predators. Spring, right after ice-out, and fall are the best times to target pike, as they are most active in cooler water temperatures. Look for pike in areas with submerged vegetation, fallen timber, and near creek mouths. A steel leader is essential, as pike have sharp teeth and can easily bite through monofilament or fluorocarbon line. A local recommendation is to try large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits. Some anglers also have success with large swimbaits. Access to the Middle Raccoon River is available at several public access points, but be prepared for some wading. Pike in this region tend to be ambush predators, so focus your efforts on areas where they can easily hide and wait for prey.
