Northern Pike

Capac, Michigan, offers some surprisingly good Northern Pike fishing in its inland lakes and the Belle River watershed. Pike in this region tend to be ambush predators, so focus on areas with dense weed beds, fallen timber, and sharp drop-offs. Spring, right after ice-out, is prime time when pike move into shallow bays to spawn. Early fall, as water temperatures cool, is another excellent period as they aggressively feed before winter. A local tip: try fishing the Belle River near the M-53 bridge – there's decent public access and the current can concentrate pike. Also, be prepared for some stained water conditions; brighter colored lures or those with rattles often perform best. Pike in this area average 2-5 pounds, but larger specimens are definitely present, so be sure to use a steel leader to prevent bite-offs.
