Northern Pike

East Grand Rapids offers some surprisingly good Northern Pike fishing right in the heart of the city, thanks to Reeds Lake and the Grand River. Reeds Lake, in particular, is known for harboring some decent-sized pike in its weedy shallows. Focus your efforts near the edges of the lake where the vegetation is thickest, especially during the spring spawn and again in the fall as the water cools. For Reeds Lake, launch near John Collins Park for easy access. The Grand River can be accessed from various points along its banks, but be mindful of currents and submerged obstacles. Pike in this area tend to be opportunistic feeders, so large, flashy lures like spoons, spinners, and crankbaits are effective. Don't be afraid to experiment with different retrieves to find what triggers a strike. A steel leader is essential, as these fish are notorious for their sharp teeth.
