Northern Pike

If you're after northern pike, East Tawas and Tawas Bay should be on your list. The weedy shallows and abundant baitfish in Tawas Bay create a perfect environment for these ambush predators. Spring, right after ice-out, is an excellent time as the pike are actively feeding. Early fall, as the water cools down, is another productive period. Focus on the weedy areas near the mouth of the Tawas River and along the shoreline of the bay. A canoe or kayak can be beneficial for accessing the shallow, weedy areas that larger boats can't reach. Be prepared to use weedless lures and steel leaders to prevent bite-offs. A local tip: try trolling large spoons or crankbaits along the weed edges. The pike in Tawas Bay are known for their aggressive strikes and impressive size; some real trophy fish are caught here every year.
