Northern Pike

Ecorse, situated on the Detroit River, provides a fantastic opportunity to target northern pike in an urban setting. The weedy flats and backwaters of the river, especially near Zug Island and the mouth of the Ecorse River, are prime pike habitat. Spring, right after ice-out, is an excellent time to fish, as the pike move into the shallows to spawn. Fall, as the water cools, is another productive period when they aggressively feed before winter. Try using large spinnerbaits, spoons, or crankbaits around weed beds and submerged structure. A wire leader is essential to prevent bite-offs. A local tip: focus on areas where the current is slower, as pike prefer to ambush their prey from cover. Be aware of heavy boat traffic on the Detroit River, especially during weekends. The pike in this area can reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a battle!
