Northern Pike

Northern Pike are a prized catch in the waters surrounding Escanaba, and the Bays de Noc provide ideal habitat for these ambush predators. Spring and early summer are excellent times to target pike, as they move into shallow weedy areas to spawn and feed. Focus your efforts around weed beds, docks, and other submerged structure. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective lures for enticing strikes. In the fall, as water temperatures cool, pike become more active and can be caught on larger baits. Trolling along weed lines or casting near drop-offs can be productive. Be sure to use a wire leader to prevent pike from biting through your line. The Ford River is a great access point to target these toothy critters. Pay attention to water clarity, as pike rely on sight to hunt. If the water is murky, use brightly colored lures to increase visibility.
