Northern Pike

If you're looking to tangle with Northern Pike in southwest Michigan, Galesburg offers some solid opportunities. The Kalamazoo River, winding its way through the area, holds a healthy population of pike, particularly in the slower, weedy sections and backwaters. Spring, just after ice-out, is prime time as pike move into shallower areas to spawn. Fall is also excellent as they aggressively feed before winter. Don't overlook Morrow Lake, a reservoir on the Kalamazoo, which can produce some real trophy pike. For river access, check out the public access points along River Street in Galesburg or the larger launch at Morrow Lake County Park. A local tip: Pike in the Kalamazoo can be wary, so try using fluorocarbon leaders, especially in clear water. Also, be prepared for submerged logs and vegetation – it's pike habitat, but can snag your line. The pike in this region tend to be ambush predators, so target areas with structure and cover.
