Northern Pike

If you're after northern pike near Grosse Pointe Park, Lake St. Clair is your primary destination. This sprawling lake provides ample habitat for these ambush predators, especially in the weedy areas and canals that connect to the lake. Spring, just after ice-out, is a fantastic time to target pike as they move into the shallows to spawn. Fall is another prime period as they aggressively feed before winter. Try focusing on areas near the mouth of the canals where they meet the lake. A useful tip is to check the wind direction, as pike often congregate on the windward side of weed beds. Large spoons, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are all effective lures. Dead bait, such as smelt or herring, fished under a bobber can also be highly productive. Lake St. Clair is known for producing some impressive pike, so be prepared for a good fight. Remember to use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs and handle the fish carefully with a net or jaw spreader due to their sharp teeth.
