Northern Pike

Targeting Northern Pike near Hamtramck means exploring the Detroit River and its connected waterways. While not directly within city limits, these waters are easily accessible and hold a healthy pike population. The Detroit River's weedy flats and backwater areas provide excellent ambush points for these predators. Early spring, just after ice-out, and late fall, as water temperatures drop, are peak seasons. Large spinnerbaits and crankbaits are local favorites. A practical tip: focus on areas near Grosse Ile or Fighting Island, known for their extensive weed beds. Be mindful of boat traffic, especially on weekends, as the Detroit River is a busy waterway. Pike in this system tend to be opportunistic feeders, so don't be afraid to experiment with different lure presentations. Also, a steel leader is a must to prevent bite-offs.
