Northern Pike

If you're after northern pike in the Ionia, Michigan area, the Grand River is your primary target. This stretch of the river provides ideal habitat with its slow currents, abundant weed beds, and downed timber. Pike thrive here, often ambushing prey from cover. While you can catch pike year-round, the best times are typically in the spring, just after ice-out, and again in the fall as water temperatures cool. Spring finds them in the shallows, near spawning areas. In the fall, they aggressively feed to prepare for winter. A key to success is understanding the river's structure. Look for deeper holes near bends in the river or areas where feeder creeks enter. A durable steel leader is a must to avoid bite-offs. Consider launching a small boat or kayak at the Whites Bridge Road access point for broader access to the river. Be aware of changing water levels, as the Grand can be prone to flooding.
