Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Iron River is a fantastic starting point. The area is dotted with numerous inland lakes and the Iron River itself, all holding good populations of pike. What makes this area special is the relatively low fishing pressure compared to southern Michigan, allowing for a more secluded and rewarding experience. Spring, right after ice-out, and fall are prime times to target these predators as they actively feed in the cooler water. For spring, focus on shallow weedy bays where pike are spawning. In the fall, target areas near drop-offs and structure. A local tip: many of the smaller lakes have limited or no public access. Be sure to check township maps and regulations before heading out. Also, be prepared for stained water conditions, which means brighter colored lures or those with plenty of vibration often work best.
