Northern Pike

Northern pike fishing near Kaleva centers around the Manistee River and the connected lakes. The Manistee, with its weedy backwaters and slow-moving sections, provides excellent habitat for these ambush predators. Spring and fall are the peak seasons, as pike become more active in cooler water temperatures. Large spinnerbaits, spoons, and crankbaits are effective for covering water and triggering strikes. Don't be afraid to use a wire leader, as pike have sharp teeth! A practical tip for the Manistee: focus on areas where smaller feeder creeks enter the river, as these can concentrate baitfish and, consequently, pike. Some local anglers also have success trolling large minnow imitations along weed edges in the larger lakes. Pike in this region can reach impressive sizes, so be prepared for a battle.
