Northern Pike

If you're after Northern Pike, Mancelona's chain of lakes and rivers offer some exciting opportunities. Torch Lake, though larger and more well-known, is within reasonable driving distance and holds a healthy population of pike. Closer to Mancelona, consider exploring some of the smaller, weedy lakes and backwaters connected to the Manistee River system. Pike fishing peaks in the spring, right after ice-out, as they move into shallow bays to spawn. Fall is another excellent time, as pike aggressively feed before winter. A local tactic that works well is fishing large spinnerbaits or crankbaits along weed edges. Many of the smaller lakes have limited access, so research boat launches and access points thoroughly. Be prepared for some stained water conditions in the smaller lakes, especially after heavy rains. Pike in this region can be aggressive, but also wary, so vary your retrieve and lure selection until you find what they're hitting.
